Thailand Deploys AI-Powered Robot Cop With Facial Recognition and Drones for Event Safety, But Movement Uncertain
On April 16th, the Royal Thai Police unveiled a new addition to their ranks: "AI Police Cyborg 1.0." This robot cop, as shown in an official photograph, stands in a police uniform on a wheeled metal platform, flanked by other uniformed officers. Developed collaboratively by the Provincial Police Command 7, Nakhon Pathom Provincial Police, and Nakhon Pathom Municipality, the AI-powered machine boasts a suite of surveillance capabilities. These include access to nearby CCTV cameras, drones, and its own 360-degree AI cameras equipped with facial recognition, behavioral analysis, weapon detection, and alerts for individuals on a blacklist. According to the Royal Thai Police (RTP), these advanced video analytics enable the robot to differentiate between water guns and actual weapons, and to identify violent behavior. The robot is linked to the province’s Command and Control Center to enhance event safety management. The primary goal of the AI Police Cyborg 1.0, named "Nakhon Pathom is Safe" in Thai, is to boost public safety, particularly during large events where traditional policing resources are often stretched thin. A spokesperson for the RTP told ABP Live, “The AI Police Cyborg 1.0 helps us enhance public safety, especially during large events. It’s a force multiplier that never tires and maintains constant vigilance.” While the concept of a surveillance-equipped robot may seem appealing on the surface, concerns arise when considering the broader context. The Thai police have a history of brutality against activists, and it’s not coincidental that on the same day, April 16th, Bloomberg reported that Thai security services were doxxing pro-democracy activists on Facebook and X. The introduction of AI Police Cyborg 1.0 has the potential to exacerbate social and political tensions, given the extensive surveillance capabilities of the robot. However, the immediate threat posed by police robots may not be as severe as that of more advanced technologies, such as cell surveillance. Instead, the real issue with these robots often lies in their practical limitations and the challenges they face in real-world environments. New York City, for instance, abandoned its subway robot in an empty storefront after a lackluster pilot program, while a police robot in California once dismissed a woman seeking help. Despite the enthusiastic marketing of the AI Police Cyborg 1.0's capabilities, there is skepticism about its actual functionality. Futurism noted that the robot has not been seen moving independently. Many robots still struggle with basic navigation tasks, such as maneuvering sidewalks or avoiding toddlers, so it’s plausible that the Thai robot either lacks the ability to move on its own or performs these tasks poorly. Given these limitations and the poor track record of police robots globally, it is unlikely that Thailand’s AI Police Cyborg 1.0 will fully realize its dystopian potential any time soon.
