Spotify Labels AI Personas, Removes Music From Recommendations
Spotify has announced a comprehensive policy update to identify and restrict AI-generated artist identities on its streaming platform, with mandatory labeling rolling out in mid-September. The initiative introduces a designated AI Persona badge for profiles representing artificial identities, which will appear across user profiles, search interfaces, and playlist track rows. To ensure accuracy and prioritize high-traffic accounts, Spotify will supplement self-reporting with automated reviews of profiles featuring photorealistic AI imagery, focusing first on entities that have already met specific audience thresholds. Under the new guidelines, music from AI Persona accounts will be systematically excluded from Spotify’s editorial curation and algorithmic recommendation engines. Streams will only be promoted if a user explicitly follows the account, establishing a clear boundary between human-curated discovery and direct AI engagement. The company emphasized that the designation targets the artist’s public identity rather than the creative process itself, noting that existing metadata tools like AI Credits and SongDNA will continue to document how tracks are produced. This policy represents a strategic refinement of Spotify’s broader artificial intelligence framework, first established in September 2025. The platform has consistently drawn a line between innovative AI integration, such as its AI DJ and Prompted Playlists, and the proliferation of low-quality, mass-generated content. By filtering out AI Persona tracks from recommendation algorithms, Spotify aims to preserve catalog quality and mitigate the risk of user churn driven by content saturation. Affected artists will retain the right to appeal incorrect labeling, and a user reporting mechanism for undetected AI profiles will launch in the coming months. While AI Personas will be restricted from organic discovery, the platform will continue to accommodate controlled AI experimentation. Starting August 11, 2026, artists may voluntarily disclose AI persona status through the Spotify for Artists dashboard. These measures align with recent licensing agreements that permit fan-made AI remixes and covers while ensuring royalty distribution. The updated framework positions Spotify to navigate the evolving intersection of artificial intelligence and music creation, balancing technological advancement with content authenticity and listener trust.
