Google Updates Android to Reduce Motion Sickness and Enhance Accessibility

Google announced on Tuesday the rollout of five new Android updates designed to enhance device accessibility, health comfort, and personalization. The updates mark a strategic push to integrate Google’s Gemini AI deeper into core system functions while introducing features that address longstanding user pain points. The most prominent addition is Motion Assist, an accessibility and comfort feature tailored for users experiencing motion sickness while traveling. By overlaying a dynamic bubble that responds to vehicle acceleration and deceleration, the feature bridges the sensory disconnect between visual screen activity and physical movement. Users can enable the function automatically, pin it to Quick Settings, and adjust its appearance. The update ships with Android 17, positioning Android to match a similar accessibility offering recently introduced by Apple. In the accessibility domain, Google introduced Guided Vision, a camera-driven tool powered by Gemini that assists blind and low-vision users in navigating physical environments. The feature analyzes surroundings to read fine print, identify objects, and decipher menus under low-light conditions. It includes real-time voice guidance to optimize camera positioning. Guided Vision will roll out to devices running Android 9 or higher in regions where Gemini services are active. Beyond health and accessibility, Google is leveraging Gemini to streamline everyday task management. A new Remembered Items section within the Find Hub utility allows users to verbally log the location of critical objects and attach reference photographs for future retrieval. This AI-driven indexing aims to reduce the friction of locating frequently misplaced items. Finally, Google is overhauling Google Messages with enhanced customization and productivity tools. The messaging application will now support individualized chat themes, including custom backgrounds, profile images, and accent colors that automatically adjust message bubble styling. Additionally, native Google Keep integration will enable users to create, share, and collaboratively edit notes and lists directly within conversations. The personalization update aligns with iOS messaging trends, while the collaboration feature targets workflow efficiency. Collectively, the Android updates signal Google’s commitment to refining baseline usability while expanding AI-driven functionality across device generations. The rollout prioritizes inclusive design, cross-platform parity, and seamless digital-physical integration.
