ChatGPT Atlas Gets Arc-like Vertical Tabs and New Features

OpenAI has rolled out a new update to ChatGPT Atlas, introducing vertical tabs that bring the interface closer in style to the Arc browser. Instead of traditional top-of-screen tabs, users can now switch to a left-side sidebar that houses their open tabs. This sidebar is resizable and allows users to reorder tabs by dragging them, offering a more streamlined workflow similar to Arc’s design. While the new sidebar enhances organization, it still lacks some of the advanced features found in Arc’s version. The address bar remains at the top of the screen, maintaining a familiar layout for users. To enable vertical tabs, simply right-click inside the address bar, hover over “Tab Style,” and select “Vertical Tabs.” Alongside this change, users can now set Google as their default search engine. This update makes sense given that much of the browsing experience in ChatGPT Atlas feels like a more guided version of searching the web. Previously, the tool would surface around 10 relevant sources from its own research, with a link to full Google results in the top-right corner. Now, with Google as the default, users can access search results directly. Other improvements include the ability to select and drag multiple tabs at once by holding down the Command (Mac) or Shift key while clicking. Users can also import browser extensions when first installing ChatGPT Atlas, though this feature is not yet available for those who already have the app installed. The downloads interface has been upgraded for better usability, and the app now supports iCloud Keychain passkeys for secure password management. ChatGPT Atlas launched on macOS last month, joining a growing list of AI-powered browsing tools like Perplexity’s Comet and Google’s Gemini extension in Chrome. The app allows users to either enter a URL or type a question, which is then answered by ChatGPT with web-sourced information.
