Tesla Robotaxi Expands to 7 US Markets, Nears 2.5M Paid Miles.

During Tesla’s second-quarter earnings call, executives outlined the continued expansion of its Robotaxi autonomous ride-hailing service, emphasizing measured growth and stringent safety protocols over rapid scaling. Since launching the service in June 2025 with a limited fleet of Model Y vehicles and onboard safety monitors, Tesla has operated across seven U.S. metropolitan areas. Six of these markets now support fully unsupervised operations, though the rollout pace remains conservative compared to CEO Elon Musk’s initial projections. Operational data revealed that Tesla has accumulated nearly 2.5 million cumulative paid miles, including trips with human supervisors. Unsupervised autonomous driving has surpassed 380,000 miles across two states, with Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s vice president of AI, confirming zero notable incidents during these unsupervised runs. The company reported a weekly mileage growth rate exceeding 10 percent, a trajectory executives expect to sustain through the remainder of the year. Musk emphasized that safety remains the primary constraint on deployment scale, noting that any injury would trigger immediate regulatory scrutiny and nationwide operational halts. Tesla’s current geographic footprint includes Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and the San Francisco Bay Area, with preparations underway to enter Phoenix and Las Vegas. All active regions outside California are currently ramping up unsupervised service. The company continues to navigate a competitive landscape, trailing Alphabet’s Waymo, which operates in eleven U.S. markets and has logged over 200 million fully autonomous, rider-only miles. Tesla maintains that its iterative AI approach and current safety metrics validate its development strategy. On the manufacturing front, Tesla announced the installation of an annual production capacity exceeding 125,000 Cybercabs, its purpose-built autonomous vehicle, at Gigafactory Texas during the second quarter. While full production rates remain undisclosed, employees have begun testing the vehicle in autonomous mode on-site. Musk noted that additional driving data specific to the Cybercab chassis is required before scaling road deployment. Complementing the ride-hailing initiative, Tesla reported nearly 1.48 million paying Full Self-Driving subscribers, reflecting a 56 percent year-over-year increase and underscoring sustained consumer demand for the company’s advanced driver-assistance technology.
