xAI Cofounders Exit: Another Leaves Amidst Staff Exodus
Founders of Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI continue to depart. According to individuals familiar with the matter, founding team member Zihang Dai left earlier this week, having had his xAI affiliation removed from his X profile. Another senior executive, Guodong Zhang, has also informed some colleagues that he plans to resign within the coming days, though his X homepage still displays his identity as part of xAI. Since January, multiple founders have already departed xAI, including Toby Pohlen, Jimmy Ba, Tony Wu, and Greg Yang. If Dai and Zhang follow suit, only two of the eleven co-founders who established the company alongside Musk in 2023 will remain employed at xAI: Manuel Kroiss and Ross Nordeen. Zhang reports directly to Musk and oversees two core projects—Grok Code and Grok Imagine. Earlier this year, shortly before Tony Wu's departure, Zhang was assigned expanded responsibilities. At a recent public event, Musk stated that xAI's Grok models "still lag behind" in programming capabilities. He noted that the company is concentrating resources on improving its coding abilities to catch up with competitors in this field. Meanwhile, xAI is undergoing organizational restructuring. Since January, the firm has laid off dozens of employees. In an earlier all-hands meeting, Musk explained that as the organization expands, structural adjustments are necessary to meet evolving developmental needs. This reshuffle follows closely after the exits of two executives reporting directly to Musk—Tony Wu and Jimmy Ba. Subsequently, xAI integrated with Musk-owned rocket manufacturer SpaceX. Market rumors suggest SpaceX may launch an initial public offering later this year, potentially valued at $1.5 trillion. Following the restructuring, it was reported that Macrohard, an AI project previously led by Pohlen, stalled internally at xAI. Musk subsequently posted on X stating the initiative is now advancing through collaboration with Tesla. To date, neither xAI nor Dai and Zhang have issued any comments regarding these departures or organizational changes.
