Anthropic pledges to cover 100% of grid upgrade costs for AI data centers
Anthropic has announced it will cover 100% of the costs associated with grid upgrades required to connect its AI data centers to the electrical system, ensuring that American households will not face higher electricity bills as a result. In a blog post published Wednesday, the company stated it will absorb all expenses related to infrastructure improvements needed to support its growing data center footprint. The pledge comes as AI companies race to expand computing capacity, driving unprecedented demand for electricity. Anthropic emphasized that it will also secure additional power through long-term contracts and invest in grid optimization tools designed to reduce strain on local energy systems and help keep prices stable. “We will pay for 100% of the grid upgrades needed to interconnect our data centers,” the company said. “The country needs to build new data centers quickly to maintain its competitiveness in AI and national security. But AI companies shouldn't leave American ratepayers to pick up the tab.” This commitment follows Anthropic’s earlier announcement of a $50 billion investment in U.S. AI infrastructure, with data centers planned in Texas and New York. The company’s move aligns with growing scrutiny over how data center expansion is affecting utility costs. The trend of massive infrastructure investments by tech giants has drawn attention. In November, Meta said it would invest $600 billion in the U.S. to support AI technology, infrastructure, and workforce development. Apple also announced in August it would add $100 billion to its U.S. infrastructure spending, bringing its total to $600 billion. However, rising electricity costs have become a growing concern. According to a recent study by PowerLines, a nonprofit advocating for utility customers, electric and gas utilities requested $31 billion in rate increases from state regulators last year—more than double the $15 billion requested the previous year. Many utilities have cited data center demand as a primary driver of these increases. President Donald Trump has also weighed in, urging tech companies to cover their own infrastructure costs. “I never want Americans to pay higher Electricity bills because of Data Centers,” he wrote on Truth Social last month, adding that “big technology companies who build them must pay their own way.” Microsoft recently adopted a similar approach, announcing it would pay utility rates high enough to fully cover the cost of its data centers’ electricity use, aiming to minimize the impact of its expansion on local communities. Anthropic’s latest pledge adds to a growing trend of AI firms taking responsibility for the broader energy implications of their growth.
