The blaze was contained within an exterior gated area without causing injuries. The suspect fled the scene on foot approximately one hour later while police were responding to another potential arson threat near OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters; they recognized him based on descriptions from the earlier incident and took him into custody. OpenAI confirmed that someone threw a Molotov cocktail toward Altman's home early that morning and issued threats against its corporate headquarters. The company stated that fortunately no one was injured and expressed gratitude for the swift response by law enforcement authorities. Investigations revealed that the suspect had joined the Discord server associated with PauseAI, an organization opposing advancements in frontier artificial intelligence. This group advocates halting development of advanced models such as GPT-5.4. In a statement, PauseAI noted that the individual posted just 34 messages containing no explicit violent rhetoric nor participation in any offline activities or organized actions. His account has since been suspended following the incident. In his post-event blog comment, Altman acknowledged public concerns regarding technological progress but called for reduced polarization and extremism, urging fewer "explosions both literal and metaphorical."
