NVIDIA and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology have announced the launch of a joint artificial intelligence research laboratory at the KAIST Kim Jaechul Graduate School of AI in Seoul. The collaboration aims to accelerate the development of agentic AI and strengthen South Korea's position as a global technology hub. The initiative integrates NVIDIA's full-stack AI expertise, Nemotron open models, and AI Cloud computing resources with KAIST's scientific talent to address Korea-specific industrial and linguistic needs. The partnership is underpinned by a $300 million commitment, delivering $50 million in annual compute contributions over an initial five-year period. This infrastructure will enable researchers to access the latest NVIDIA hardware through local cloud partners, facilitating large-scale model training and agent system development. Bill Dally, NVIDIA's chief scientist and senior vice president of research, emphasized that the lab provides a foundation for next-generation AI research tailored to Korean industries and language. A central pillar of the collaboration is the development and retention of top-tier AI talent. The joint lab plans to fund at least 10 KAIST researchers annually, with each recipient receiving internship opportunities at NVIDIA. Additionally, NVIDIA will recruit exceptional Korean researchers for full-time positions, creating robust career pathways that bridge academia and industry. Hyunwoo Kim, an incoming faculty member at KAIST who will serve as the lab's head, stated that the initiative addresses the new requirements of frontier AI research, which demands deep industry-academia ties and world-class infrastructure to attract global scientists. Research priorities include optimizing AI models for the Korean language and developing applications for domestic use cases. The laboratory seeks to establish a streamlined pipeline from academic discovery to enterprise deployment, fostering national AI capabilities. By combining KAIST's focus on engineering and digital humanities with NVIDIA's technological ecosystem, the lab intends to drive innovation across robotics, semiconductors, and agentic AI, reinforcing Korea's role in the advancement of artificial intelligence.
