Meta brings virtual writing to Ray-Ban Display glasses

Meta has expanded access to its Meta Ray-Ban Display smart glasses by rolling out new capabilities to all users. The most significant update is the introduction of gesture-based writing, which allows individuals to compose messages using hand movements controlled by a neural wristband integrated into the device. Initially available only in early access for WhatsApp and Messenger earlier this year, this feature is now fully supported across WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and native Android and iOS messaging applications. Alongside writing functionality, Meta is introducing a feature named display recording. This tool captures a video that merges the view from the smart glasses lens, the real-world environment visible to the user, and surrounding audio. This provides a unique perspective on what the user experiences in real-time. Additionally, navigation capabilities have been broadened to include walking directions throughout the entire United States and in major international cities such as London, Paris, and Rome. The company is also enhancing communication tools with live caption support. Users can now view real-time captions for WhatsApp messages, Facebook Messenger interactions, and voice messages sent via Instagram DMs, improving accessibility and understanding during conversations. Meta is further opening its ecosystem to third-party innovation by launching a developer preview for the Meta Ray-Ban Display. This update enables developers to create applications specifically for the glasses, including the ability to deploy web apps directly to the hardware. This move aims to foster a wider range of utility and entertainment options for device owners beyond Meta's own suite of services. The rollout marks a significant step in making the technology previously reserved for testers accessible to the general public. By integrating these features into widely used platforms and expanding the addressable market for navigation and communication, Meta seeks to establish the smart glasses as a practical tool for daily use. The combination of gesture control, immersive recording, and expanded developer support represents a comprehensive update aimed at increasing the device's utility and adoption rate.
