Cambricon Reaches First Trillion RMB STAR Market Cap

Shanghai-based AI chipmaker Cambricon (688256.SH) has become the first company on China’s STAR Market to surpass a trillion-yuan market capitalization, driven by a dramatic turnaround in its fundamental financials and surging domestic demand for AI infrastructure. On June 30, the stock surged over eight percent, cementing the milestone amid a broader rally in domestic computing sectors. Founded a decade ago by brothers Chen Yunji and Chen Tianshi at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Cambricon initially pioneered a specialized processor architecture for neural networks. The company first gained commercial traction by supplying neural processing unit intellectual property to Huawei, notably powering an early smartphone chipset. However, following Huawei’s pivot to in-house chip design in 2019, Cambricon executed a strategic shift from IP licensing to designing and selling cloud AI accelerators and computing systems. This transition coincided with a prolonged period of heavy research and development investment and consistent losses, exacerbated by U.S. export controls that restricted access to advanced manufacturing and tools. The company’s fortunes reversed in 2025 as domestic large language model deployment accelerated and supply chain localization gained urgency. Cambricon reported its first full-year profit, with 2025 revenue reaching 6.5 billion yuan and net profit of 2.06 billion yuan. Cloud-based products now account for nearly all revenue, signaling a successful commercialization pivot. Momentum continued into 2026, with first-quarter revenue surging 159.6 percent year-over-year to 2.89 billion yuan and net profit nearly doubling to 1.01 billion yuan. Operating cash flow also turned positive in the quarter, reaching 834 million yuan, reflecting improved sales collection. To support scaling production and meet rising order demand, Cambricon secured a 12 billion yuan comprehensive banking credit facility in May and has significantly expanded inventory and prepayments. Despite the bullish market reception and its growing title as a domestic alternative to Nvidia, structural challenges persist. Customer concentration remains high, with the top five clients driving over 88 percent of 2025 sales. Rapid inventory accumulation also introduces valuation risks amid fast-paced hardware iterations, already reflected in 246 million yuan in asset impairment losses recorded in the first quarter. Furthermore, long-term sustainability will depend on sustaining software ecosystem adoption, diversifying its client base, and maintaining consistent cash conversion. Cambricon’s trajectory from a university laboratory concept to China’s first trillion-yuan STAR Market IPO reflects the intensifying race for domestic AI compute autonomy. Whether the current valuation translates into enduring industry leadership will ultimately hinge on execution amid tightening technological and geopolitical constraints.
