OpenAI rolls out affordable ChatGPT Go plan in Indonesia, challenging Google’s AI Plus with $4.50 monthly tier

OpenAI is expanding its affordable ChatGPT Go subscription plan to Indonesia, following its successful launch in India. The plan, priced at Rp75,000 ($4.50) per month, offers a mid-tier option between OpenAI’s free tier and its premium $20-per-month ChatGPT Plus subscription. The ChatGPT Go plan provides users with 10 times the usage limits of the free version, allowing for more frequent interactions, image generation, and file uploads. It also enhances the chatbot’s ability to remember past conversations, enabling more personalized and context-aware responses over time. Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, shared on X that since the Go plan launched in India, paid subscriber numbers have more than doubled, signaling strong demand for budget-friendly AI access. This expansion marks OpenAI’s continued push to grow its user base in emerging markets, where cost sensitivity is a key factor in adoption. By offering a low-cost, feature-rich alternative, OpenAI aims to attract users who want more than the free version but may not be ready to pay full price for Plus. The move puts OpenAI directly in competition with Google, which recently launched its own AI Plus subscription in Indonesia. Google’s plan, priced similarly, unlocks access to its advanced Gemini 2.5 Pro chatbot, creative tools like Flow, Whisk, and Veo 3 Fast for image and video generation, and enhanced features for its AI research assistant NotebookLM. It also integrates AI across core productivity apps such as Gmail, Docs, and Sheets, and includes 200GB of cloud storage. As both companies vie for dominance in Southeast Asia’s rapidly growing AI market, the battle for users is increasingly centered on value, accessibility, and the breadth of integrated tools. With Indonesia’s large and young digital population, the region has become a key battleground for AI-driven services, and the rollout of affordable subscription tiers underscores the strategic importance of this market.
