Trump Cancels Planned Federal Force Surge in San Francisco After Talks with Tech CEOs Huang and Benioff

President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he is calling off a planned deployment of federal forces to San Francisco, citing conversations with prominent tech leaders. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had been preparing to send a "surge" of federal troops to the city for Saturday but decided to hold off after being urged by several influential figures, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff. Trump said he received calls from "friends of mine who live in the area" on Wednesday night, including Huang and Benioff, who encouraged him to reconsider. He described them as "great people" and said they wanted to give San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie a chance to address the city’s challenges. "They want to give it a 'shot,'" Trump wrote, adding that the federal deployment would not happen on Saturday. Mayor Lurie welcomed the decision, stating that while he supports collaboration with federal agencies to tackle drug-related issues, the presence of military and immigration enforcement personnel would undermine the city’s recovery. "We appreciate that the president understands that we are the global hub for technology, and when San Francisco is strong, our country is strong," Lurie said in a statement. Trump left open the possibility of future action, urging followers to "Stay tuned!" Benioff had previously expressed support for deploying the National Guard to San Francisco, but later apologized after backlash, including the resignation of venture capitalist Ron Conway from the Salesforce Foundation board. In a recent post on X, Benioff clarified that after listening to residents and officials—and following what he called the largest and safest Dreamforce event in Salesforce’s history—he no longer believes the National Guard is necessary for public safety. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has maintained a close relationship with Trump since the president’s return to office, including accompanying him on a trip to Saudi Arabia in May. The company has also been a key player in advancing AI infrastructure, aligning with Trump’s broader tech policy priorities. Salesforce declined to comment on the latest developments, and Nvidia did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
