General Catalyst Leads $1.1B Funding for xAI Co-Founder's River AI

River AI, an artificial intelligence startup founded by xAI co-founder Igor Babuschkin, has secured $1.1 billion in a seed and Series A financing round led by General Catalyst and AMP PBC. The investment includes participation from Nvidia, AMD Ventures, Y Combinator, and Temasek. AMP PBC is a newly established AI-focused firm founded by Anjney Midha, a former general partner at Andreessen Horowitz. Babuschkin, who brings experience from xAI, DeepMind, and OpenAI, launched River from stealth in June as a two-month-old entity with the objective of rebuilding the AI stack end-to-end. The company's mission prioritizes the development of personally trainable agents over models designed to replace human labor. Babuschkin describes a future where AI acts as a guardian angel that is deeply personalized and owned by the user. To realize this vision, River intends to reconstruct training processes, model architecture, product layers, and hardware infrastructure to support local, personal AI deployment. River has released an API that supports reinforcement learning and low-rank adaptation fine-tuning, enabling developers to customize open models. The platform positions its technology as an alternative to prompt engineering, allowing users to train and serve proprietary models via standard endpoints. For enterprise users, River's neocloud offering promises to execute complex reinforcement learning runs in 15 to 20 minutes without dedicated infrastructure teams, claiming cost savings of two to four times compared to closed-source solutions. This strategy addresses growing enterprise interest in open-weight models and direct model control. River's entry coincides with broader market shifts toward personalized agents and AI-integrated hardware, supported by industry moves such as Nvidia's partnerships with PC manufacturers. The startup now holds a significant war chest to execute its technical roadmap in a competitive landscape.
