"Humanities + Medicine" Interdisciplinary Salon at Wuhan University

On November 13, Wuhan University hosted the "Humanities, Social Sciences + Medicine" interdisciplinary salon as part of the 2025 Academic Service Month. Organized jointly by the Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences and the Taikang School of Medicine (School of Basic Medical Sciences), the event brought together over 50 experts from Wuhan University’s Taikang School of Medicine, Zhongnan Hospital, Tongji School of Medicine and Tongji Hospital at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan Central Hospital, Wuhan Mental Health Center, and Wuhan Steel Hospital. The session was chaired by Professor Wei Lei from the Taikang School of Medicine. Six scholars delivered keynote presentations focusing on cutting-edge intersections between humanities, social sciences, and medicine. In the humanities and social sciences domain, Professor Wei Lijia from the School of Economics and Management explored "Artificial Intelligence + Medical Decision-Making," demonstrating how data-driven approaches can enhance clinical workflows. Professor Zhang Hong’s team from the School of Law examined "Ethical Governance of Brain-Computer Interface Technologies," analyzing legal boundaries and governance frameworks in the context of rapidly advancing technology. Professor Lu Quan from the School of Information Management discussed innovations in "Smart Health and Smart Medicine," highlighting the integration of big data and artificial intelligence in healthcare delivery. From the medical perspective, Professor Mei Long from the Taikang School of Medicine presented research on the neural mechanisms underlying maternal behavior using advanced techniques such as optogenetics. Dr. Ding Sheng, Director of the Chronic Disease Management Center at Wuhan Central Hospital, discussed "Integrating Medical Care and Prevention to Advance Regional Chronic Disease Management." Dr. Song Jin, Deputy Chief Physician at Wuhan Mental Health Center, addressed the connection between gut microbiota and mental health. During the discussion session, participants engaged in an in-depth exchange on the practical applications and ethical challenges of artificial intelligence and big data in medical decision-making and chronic disease management. Experts emphasized the value of interdisciplinary dialogue in broadening research perspectives and identifying collaborative opportunities, expressing strong interest in future joint efforts in areas such as smart healthcare and health governance. The Academic Service Month, organized by the Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences, features 12 academic events from mid-October to late November under three themes: "Interdisciplinary Integration," "Digital Intelligence Empowerment," and "Youth Research Teams." The initiative aims to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration, leverage digital and intelligent technologies to advance humanities and social sciences research, inspire innovation among young scholars, and cultivate a more open and cooperative academic environment.
