Bluesky Attie Adds Quests for Open Social Research

Bluesky has expanded its AI assistant, Attie, with a new capability called Quests, transforming the tool into an open-ended social research platform. The update enables users to query the assistant for real-time information and news distributed across the broader AT Protocol ecosystem, commonly referred to as the Atmosphere. This network encompasses Bluesky and any third-party application built on the shared underlying protocol. Launched in March, Attie was initially designed to help users construct custom algorithmic feeds without requiring programming knowledge. The Quests integration shifts the focus toward information retrieval and network analysis, allowing users to identify trending subjects, track emerging narratives, and pinpoint influential accounts within specific domains or geographic regions. The functionality is currently rolling out in beta, with phased invitations extended to users on an established waitlist. The strategic pivot comes as Bluesky navigates a period of moderated expansion. After doubling its registered user base to forty million last October, growth has plateaued over the past eight months, with the platform now reporting approximately forty-five point six million accounts. To counter this slowdown and explore sustainable monetization pathways, the company is leveraging AI-driven utilities that enhance platform stickiness and utility. Attie remains free during its initial rollout, though leadership has previously indicated plans to introduce premium tiers for advanced features. The development aligns with Bluesky recent financial backing. The organization closed a one hundred million dollar funding round in 2025, providing capital to sustain AT Protocol infrastructure while experimenting with value-added services. These investments support both community-facing enhancements and potential subscription models aimed at power users. The rollout also reflects a calculated balance between the platform historically skeptical stance on artificial intelligence and the operational necessity of generating revenue to fund ongoing development. Jay Graber, who stepped down as chief executive officer in March to assume the role of chief innovation officer, outlined the vision behind the update. Graber emphasized that Attie aims to empower users to verify information independently, thereby mitigating misinformation and reducing the cognitive load of navigating decentralized social networks. The redesign accompanying Quests will also introduce improved accessibility standards and a revised visual identity, with additional interface improvements scheduled for release in the coming months. Under the new executive leadership of Toni Schneider, former founding CEO of Automattic, the company continues to prioritize tools that simplify protocol adoption while maintaining an open, user-controlled social architecture.
