Anthropic Restores Fable 5 Access After White House Negotiations

Anthropic will restore public access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 artificial intelligence models following a resolution with the U.S. government. The Department of Commerce recently lifted export controls that abruptly suspended access to both systems on June 12. In a statement posted to X, Anthropic confirmed it will begin redeploying the models starting the following day, thanking users for their patience and acknowledging the collaborative effort required for reinstatement. The suspension originated from an executive order issued by the Trump administration, which mandated that Anthropic block access for all foreign nationals, including company employees. Anthropic leadership maintained that the regulatory action resulted from a misunderstanding regarding an alleged Fable 5 jailbreak. Company officials subsequently traveled to Washington, D.C., to negotiate a resolution with White House representatives. This latest regulatory dispute highlights the ongoing friction between advanced AI developers and federal authorities. In March, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth formally designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk, a move that prompted the company to initiate a lawsuit. The legal challenge remains pending. The current situation follows precedent set earlier this year when Anthropic restricted public access to its initial Claude Mythos Preview. Citing advanced cybersecurity exploitation capabilities, the firm deployed that model exclusively to vetted enterprise partners under Project Glasswing. The restoration of model access coincides with a pivotal phase in Anthropic’s corporate development. On June 1, the company filed a confidential draft S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission, initiating the process for a potential initial public offering later this year. The incident also intersects with President Donald Trump’s recent AI executive order, which outlines a voluntary thirty-day federal review period for advanced models prior to public deployment. As Anthropic advances toward public markets, the rapid reinstatement of Fable 5 and Mythos 5 indicates a temporary de-escalation in federal oversight, though the broader framework for AI safety and export regulation remains subject to continued legal and political scrutiny.
