OpenAI Creates One of World’s Richest Charities with $100B+ Nonprofit Stake Amid Major Restructuring
OpenAI has unveiled a major structural overhaul that has led to the creation of one of the wealthiest charities in the world. The change comes after OpenAI and Microsoft resolved their long-standing disagreements, paving the way for a new governance model that blends nonprofit oversight with for-profit growth. At the heart of the new structure is a nonprofit organization that now controls a newly formed public benefit corporation, which will house OpenAI’s for-profit operations. This shift allows OpenAI to issue traditional equity to investors, a critical step for raising the vast capital needed to advance its ambitious AI ambitions. OpenAI Chairman Bret Taylor revealed that the nonprofit will hold an equity stake in the for-profit entity worth over $100 billion. That valuation places the nonprofit among the most well-funded philanthropies globally, on par with established giants like the Gates Foundation, which was built on the wealth of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. Taylor also pointed to the Novo Nordisk Foundation—the charitable arm of the Danish pharmaceutical company behind the weight-loss drug Ozempic—as a model for what OpenAI aims to achieve. The foundation has grown significantly in recent years due to the commercial success of its products, and OpenAI is seeking a similar dynamic, where the success of its AI technologies fuels long-term philanthropy. The nonprofit’s new structure includes a $50 million grant initiative focused on three key areas: AI literacy, local innovation, and economic opportunity. The goal is to ensure that the benefits of AI are widely shared and accessible, particularly in underserved communities. Taylor stressed that safety, transparency, and community impact remain central to OpenAI’s mission. Regulatory bodies in California and Delaware are already involved in shaping oversight, underscoring the increasing scrutiny surrounding AI development and corporate governance in the tech sector. “This is just the beginning,” Taylor wrote. “Our recapitalization would unlock the ability to do much more.” The move marks a pivotal moment for OpenAI, transforming it into a hybrid model that balances aggressive growth with a strong commitment to public good—potentially setting a new precedent for how AI companies can scale while maintaining ethical responsibility.
