Erbe Intros VIO® 3n and VIO® Seal: High-Performance Surgical Generators

Erbe Elektromedizin GmbH, a leading medical technology company based in Tübingen, Germany, has significantly expanded its VIO® 3 series by introducing the new VIO® 3n and VIO® seal electrosurgical generators. The company, with over 100 years of experience in electrosurgery, launched five new configurations of the VIO® 3n series in 2023: Fire, Water, Metal, Timber, and Stone. Each configuration is specifically designed to meet the unique demands of different surgical and endoscopic procedures, enhancing efficiency and procedural simplicity. VIO® 3n Fire is optimized for high-precision cutting and hemostasis, making it ideal for ear, nose, throat (ENT), and neurosurgical operations. It features advanced high-frequency current settings that enable more refined tissue manipulation, ensuring precise control over cutting depth and range. This configuration reduces the risk of overheating and minimizes tissue damage, thus improving overall surgical outcomes. VIO® 3n Water is tailored for urological surgeries, utilizing plasma technology to minimize thermal injury. It supports underwater resection, which is particularly beneficial for procedures like bladder and prostate surgeries. The low-temperature plasma mode reduces damage to surrounding tissues, making the surgery safer and more effective. VIO® 3n Metal is designed for general surgical applications, especially those involving metal instruments such as laparoscopic surgeries. This configuration effectively reduces adhesions and tissue damage, providing surgeons with greater flexibility and control. Its ability to work seamlessly with metal instruments makes it a valuable asset in minimally invasive procedures. VIO® 3n Timber focuses on gynecological and pediatric surgeries. It operates in a low-energy mode, minimizing the impact on sensitive tissues. This configuration is particularly suited for delicate, minimally invasive procedures, ensuring a higher degree of safety and precision. VIO® 3n Stone is specialized for lithotripsy, particularly in the urological system. It delivers high-intensity ultrasound energy to break down stones quickly and efficiently while protecting surrounding tissues. This configuration addresses a common need in urological surgeries, providing a reliable solution for stone removal. The VIO® 3n series also integrates several of Erbe's renowned electrosurgical modes, including endoCUT®, preciseSECT, and pulsedAPC, ensuring consistent and repeatable tissue handling results across various medical specialties. The new generators are designed with user-friendliness in mind, featuring the intuitive stepGUIDE interface. This interface offers logical menu navigation and real-time notifications to support the surgical team, making setup and operation more straightforward. Furthermore, the VIO® 3n can be seamlessly integrated with other Erbe systems, such as the APC 3 and IES 3, or used with existing Erbe surgical instruments and accessories, adaptably fitting into current clinical environments. In addition to the VIO® 3n series, Erbe has introduced VIO® seal, the first VIO® generator specifically designed for bipolar electrosurgical applications. VIO® seal works seamlessly with tools like TriSect rapide® and BiClamp®, both as an independent solution and in conjunction with VIO® 3n or the existing VIO® D and S series. The generator's digital tool recognition capability optimizes its performance to align perfectly with surgical workflows. When paired with other VIO® generators, it enables synchronized bipolar activation, expanding the range of surgical possibilities. Dr. Helmut Scherer, Technical Director of the Erbe technology group, commented, “Building on more than 100 years of electrosurgical experience and over 100,000 VIO® device sales, Erbe is set to launch the next generation—VIO® 3n.” He added, “VIO® 3n not only retains the proven operational philosophy of the VIO® 3 series but also elevates it to a new technological era, suitable for multiple medical fields.” The new VIO® 3n and VIO® seal systems will start their rollout in CE-certified markets and associated countries in April 2025.
