Spotify launches AI audiobook tool and podcast Q&A features

Spotify announced a suite of AI-driven features at its Investor Day, targeting audiobook creation, personal podcast generation, and interactive Q&A. The streaming giant introduced a new AI tool for self-publishing audiobooks within Spotify for Authors, powered by ElevenLabs. This beta feature, launching in June on an invite-only basis, initially supports only English but will expand to ten additional languages including French, German, and Spanish later this year. Notably, authors retain full rights to their generated content and are not bound by exclusive contracts, allowing them to publish elsewhere. This move aims to offer more expressive, human-like voice models compared to existing partnerships. Spotify currently boasts over one million Audiobook+ subscriptions and projects $100 million in annual recurring revenue for the platform, with listening hours up 60% year-on-year. In a direct challenge to Google's NotebookLM, Spotify launched Studio by Spotify Labs, a standalone desktop application designed to create personalized audio briefings and podcasts. The app integrates users' personal context, such as email and calendar data, to generate daily summaries or custom audio experiences. For instance, a user can request a briefing that combines their schedule with dinner recommendations and podcast suggestions for an upcoming trip. These AI-generated podcasts are saved to the user's private library and sync across devices, remaining inaccessible to the public. The tool includes an agent capable of browsing the web to fetch real-time information. While the company warned that the early preview may contain unreliable content, it is now available to select users in over 20 markets. This follows the recent release of a command-line tool for developers to create similar personal podcasts. Spotify is also enhancing the listening experience with new interactive features. A new AI-powered Q&A function is rolling out to Premium mobile users in the U.S., Sweden, and Ireland, allowing listeners to ask questions about specific episodes or concepts. The company is also expanding its prompt-based playlist creation to include audiobooks. These initiatives support Spotify's broader strategy to deepen user engagement, following a 50% year-over-year increase in video podcast consumption. For creators, the company is updating its toolkit to facilitate monetization and brand partnerships. A new sponsorship management tool is available for creators to handle brand deals, alongside features allowing them to charge subscriptions for exclusive content. These updates position Spotify to compete more aggressively in the audio content ecosystem, bridging the gap between passive consumption and active, AI-assisted content creation. As the audio landscape evolves, Spotify continues to invest in AI to differentiate its services and offer seamless integration between personal productivity and entertainment.
