Trump Administration Lifts Restrictions on Anthropic’s Claude AI Models

Tech giant Anthropic announced on Tuesday that the federal government has officially lifted its ban on two of its models, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, bringing an end to weeks of contention within the Treasury Department. The company stated it would gradually restore user access starting Wednesday. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick posted on X platform that his department’s team had recently "worked closely with Anthropic to analyze and approve Fable 5, ensuring alignment among U.S. government agencies and consolidating America's leadership in AI." In early June this year, Anthropic released Claude Fable 5 to the public, incorporating safety measures designed to prevent the model from being used for malicious purposes such as cyberattacks. Simultaneously launched was the Mythos 5 variant, which featured fewer safeguards and was made available exclusively for testing by select large enterprises. However, just days after release, Anthropic was forced to withdraw Fable 5 due to an export control order issued by the federal government requiring the blocking of foreign users' access. At the time, Anthropic responded that the focus of governmental concern lay in a type of "jailbreak" technique potentially usable to bypass security mechanisms. The company argued these vulnerabilities were "relatively simple," noting that other AI models face similar risks, and emphasized that if adopted widely, such standards would effectively halt the deployment of all frontier AI models. This incident unfolds against the backdrop of the Trump administration weighing the risks associated with AI development. Earlier this month, President Trump signed an executive order establishing a voluntary review process lasting thirty days for advanced AI models. White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles thanked tech companies collaborating under the executive order on Tuesday, including their cooperation regarding "advanced model access, guardrail testing, and security."
