AI Startup Founder Chooses Tsinghua Over US Universities

William Chen, cofounder of Singapore-based artificial intelligence lab Sapient Intelligence, has built a cross-continental tech venture by strategically leveraging academic and entrepreneurial ecosystems in both China and the United States. In 2019, the twenty-six-year-old inventor turned down admissions from leading American institutions, including Georgia Tech and Carnegie Mellon, to pursue mechanical engineering at Tsinghua University in Beijing alongside his high school cohort and future co-founder Guan Wang. Driven by a startup-centric rather than grade-focused mindset, Chen initially questioned the Chinese academic environment but ultimately selected Tsinghua after securing a scholarship and confirming the presence of open research cultures and robust student entrepreneurship infrastructure. To maintain direct exposure to American innovation networks while studying abroad, Chen executed a comprehensive reconnaissance tour across the United States during a winter break in 2019. Over twenty days, he visited major technology hubs including MIT, Stanford, and the University of California, Berkeley, embedding himself with peers, auditing university courses, and establishing professional relationships with faculty and aspiring founders. This deliberate effort to bridge Pacific tech ecosystems allowed him to maintain a continuous presence in Western research and startup circles, a network that continues to support Sapient Intelligence’s international operations today. Following his graduation from Tsinghua, Chen and Wang formalized their partnership in 2024 by establishing Sapient Intelligence in Singapore. The laboratory currently employs fifty engineers and researchers distributed across Singapore, Beijing, and Palo Alto. The company is developing latent-space artificial intelligence models engineered to accelerate complex problem-solving while reducing computational costs relative to conventional architectures. Its flagship offering, Praxist, is an autonomous research assistant designed to streamline corporate R&D workflows. By combining Eastern academic rigor with sustained Western industry integration, Sapient Intelligence positions itself as a competitive player in the artificial general intelligence sector, targeting enterprises seeking faster, more cost-efficient AI deployment.
