Oracle secures $16B for massive Michigan data center

Related Digital, a developer specializing in high-performance computing facilities, has secured $16 billion in funding to construct a massive data center campus in Saline Township, Michigan. Located approximately 50 miles outside of Detroit, the project is designed to support the artificial intelligence ambitions of tech giant Oracle. The facility is expected to reach a power capacity exceeding one gigawatt, a scale that dwarfs the typical 100 to 300 megawatt range found in most existing data centers. The initial footprint will span 250 acres, earning praise from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer as the largest investment in the state's history. The funding package was assembled with financial backing from major investors Blackstone and PIMCO. This infrastructure is a cornerstone of the Stargate project, a $500 billion initiative jointly led by Oracle, OpenAI, and SoftBank. The collective goal is to build extensive AI infrastructure across the United States to maintain global technological leadership. Oracle projects that its AI business, which this data center will power, could generate $90 billion in revenue by 2027. The project represents a broader trend where rural American locations are becoming primary destinations for technology companies racing to secure the computational power required for advanced AI models. Despite the economic promise and the potential for job creation, the project has sparked significant opposition from local residents. Concerns have centered on the strain the facility will place on the local electric grid, water consumption, and the potential for increased pollution. During a protest in Saline last December, community members voiced their fears to local media, with one resident expressing a desire to return to a quiet life free from the disruption caused by the construction. Critics worry that the rapid expansion of data centers in rural areas prioritizes corporate growth over the quality of life and environmental stability of nearby communities. The debate highlights a growing tension between the urgent need for digital infrastructure and the environmental impact of massive power and water usage. According to a 2024 Business Insider investigation, the number of existing or planned data centers in the United States has surged to 1,240, a sharp increase from the 311 facilities permitted in 2010. A significant portion of this new development is concentrated in the Midwest. In an effort to address these rising concerns, tech industry leaders met with the White House in March to discuss sharing more of the energy costs associated with data center operations. Regarding the specific environmental threats, developers of the Saline project have promised the use of a closed-loop cooling system intended to protect Michigan's water resources. However, these assurances have done little to alleviate the anxieties of the local population in Saline, where the divide between technological progress and community preservation remains stark.
