xAI starts over after 'not built right first time'

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup, xAI, is undergoing a significant restructuring, with only two of its original eleven co-founders remaining. Describing the initial build as flawed, Musk stated the company is being rebuilt from the ground up to compete effectively with industry leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic. Despite Musk's confidence that xAI will catch up by mid-year, the transition has been turbulent, highlighted by the recent departures of co-founders Zihang Dai and Guodong Zhang. These exits followed Musk's criticism that xAI's coding tools failed to compete with rivals such as Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex. Coding tools are critical for revenue, and xAI's current lag in this area presents a serious business challenge rather than merely a reputational one. The personnel overhaul extends beyond recent departures; a month ago, eleven senior engineers left following a reorganization. Reports indicate that executives from SpaceX and Tesla have been brought in to evaluate the workforce and remove those who do not meet standards. Currently, xAI employs just over 5,000 people, trailing behind OpenAI, which has more than 7,500, though it remains comparable to Anthropic's workforce of over 4,700. To address talent gaps, Musk is actively reviewing previously rejected applications and apologizing to candidates he previously overlooked. There are signs of success in recruitment, however. Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsberg have joined xAI from Cursor, a company that relies on external models. Their decision to join signals that xAI's ownership of its own frontier large language model and computing infrastructure remains a valuable asset. The pressure to deliver is intensifying as xAI integrates with SpaceX. With anticipated public share offerings for SpaceX, the AI division faces scrutiny to prove the viability of its Grok model and generate revenue. A struggling AI arm could negatively impact investor sentiment. Looking beyond immediate tools, Musk is pursuing a broader vision through the Macrohard project, which aims to create an AI agent capable of performing complex white-collar tasks. This initiative has seen volatility, with leader Toby Pohlen departing shortly after his appointment in February. Musk has now placed the project on pause to consolidate efforts with Tesla. Tesla is developing a complementary agent called Digital Optimus, which would be directed by xAI's language model to execute tasks. This strategy mirrors similar enterprise initiatives by competitors like Perplexity and Peter Steinberger at OpenAI, who are developing digital proxies for business users. While the scope is ambitious, it aligns xAI with the growing industry focus on autonomous agents that can operate within computer environments.
