Amazon is expanding the capabilities of its Alexa Plus artificial intelligence assistant with a new software update currently in preview. The upgrade significantly enhances the virtual assistant’s ability to process complex, multi-step commands and seamlessly control a broader ecosystem of smart home hardware. The latest iteration introduces native integrations with devices from manufacturers including Bosch, Delta, Ecovacs, iRobot, Yale Home, Whirlpool, Tapo, and Eufy. By leveraging an updated AI developer toolkit, Alexa Plus will automatically interpret user intent and route specific instructions to the appropriate connected appliance. For instance, a user can request a specialized laundry cycle for delicate items, and the system will navigate appliance settings to apply the correct temperature and program without manual configuration. The update represents a strategic shift in how Alexa Plus interacts with external software and hardware. Amazon has adopted the Model Context Protocol, an open-source framework designed to standardize connections between AI models and third-party systems. This adoption removes previous technical barriers, allowing a wider array of brands to build interoperable features. Following its broader market launch in February, Alexa Plus has primarily supported a limited set of services such as Ticketmaster, OpenTable, Uber, and Thumbtack. The new protocol will enable deeper functionality across sectors including travel, dining, and productivity. Integrations with Canva, Headspace, Priceline, Lyft, Cengage, and Virgin Atlantic are scheduled for rollout later this year. Priceline, for example, will permit users to search for accommodations and complete reservations entirely through voice commands. Alongside these connectivity enhancements, Amazon is advancing its financial infrastructure to support seamless transactions within the ecosystem. Multiple upcoming partners, including Priceline, Atom Tickets, Cengage, Fandango, and Taskrabbit, will be able to process payments directly through Amazon Wallet. This development streamlines the user experience by eliminating the need to switch applications or enter billing details manually. The combined push toward advanced natural language processing, standardized API connections, and integrated commerce capabilities positions Amazon to compete more effectively in the rapidly evolving AI assistant market. By reducing friction between voice commands and external services, the company aims to establish Alexa Plus as a comprehensive digital hub for both household automation and daily productivity tasks.
