The U.S. Department of Defense recently formally designated artificial intelligence company Anthropic and its products as posing "supply chain risks," marking the first time Washington has applied this label—typically reserved for foreign entities—to an American domestic tech firm. The decision stems from a long-standing stalemate between the two parties: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei firmly refused to deploy his models for mass surveillance targeting Americans or to develop autonomous weapons capable of killing without human intervention, while the Pentagon insisted that private contractors should not restrict their use of AI. Although the Department of Defense has classified Anthropic and its offerings as supply-chain threats, commercial operations have not immediately collapsed. After carefully assessing legal risks, Microsoft announced that Anthropic's models remain accessible on its platforms—including Azure, GitHub, and Microsoft 365—for general users, though access will be restricted within defense applications. Microsoft had previously established deep collaborative ties with Anthropic. Currently, Anthropic plans to file lawsuits challenging these executive directives, while the Pentagon responded forcefully by declaring negotiations completely broken and stating that bilateral relations have plummeted to freezing levels.
