Midjourney Pivots to Water-Dunk Body Scanners Amid Expert Skepticism

Midjourney, known for its AI image generation capabilities, recently announced an expansion into the healthcare sector by launching a whole-body ultrasound scanner. The device features a water bath design where users stand on a platform and submerge themselves in a tank; surrounding underwater sensors emit and receive sound waves within 60 seconds to generate internal body images, aiming to deliver MRI-quality imagery alongside a spa-like experience. CEO David Holz even stated that this technology may eventually surpass MRI in the future. Medical imaging experts have generally adopted a cautious stance. Scholars point out that sound wave penetration can be easily interfered with by bones, air, and fat, requiring extremely pure water quality in the tank. Furthermore, the sample images currently displayed by the company exhibit low resolution and lack clinical data support. Several experts explicitly described claims of directly benchmarking against MRI as "baseless," noting that fundamental physical limitations remain unresolved. To bypass stringent FDA approval processes, Midjourney chose to launch initially as a “health” product, claiming it provides only a “three-dimensional map of body composition,” while temporarily refraining from disease diagnosis purposes. However, it has received preliminary classification confirmation from the FDA. Experts worry that if patients mistakenly believe this equipment can replace established screening methods such as mammography or colonoscopy, it could pose health risks. Academic circles unanimously emphasize that medical technologies must be built upon solid evidence rather than marketing narratives.
