Google Delays Gemini Transition from Assistant on Android to 2026 for Seamless Upgrade

Google has delayed the replacement of Google Assistant with Gemini on Android devices, confirming that the transition will now extend into 2026 instead of concluding by the end of 2025. The company explained that it is adjusting its timeline to ensure a smooth and seamless experience for users during the shift. Once the migration is complete, users on eligible devices will no longer have access to the Google Assistant app or its voice assistant functionality, provided their devices meet the minimum requirements to run Gemini. The move reflects Google’s commitment to refining the user experience before phasing out the older assistant. While the transition is being pushed back, Google has already begun integrating Gemini into other platforms. The AI assistant is now available on Wear OS smartwatches, Android Auto, and select Nest and Google Home devices. This year, Google introduced incremental changes to prepare users for the shift. It allowed users to make phone calls, set timers, and send messages through Gemini—even when the Gemini Apps Activity feature was turned off. This update enables users to enjoy assistant-like capabilities without having their interactions used to train the AI model, offering greater control over privacy and data usage. The gradual rollout underscores Google’s strategy of testing and refining Gemini’s performance across different use cases before fully replacing Assistant. The company continues to emphasize reliability, functionality, and user trust as it moves toward a future where Gemini serves as the primary AI assistant across its ecosystem.
