OpenAI’s First Hardware: Smart Speaker with Camera Likely to Launch in 2027
OpenAI’s first hardware product is expected to be a smart speaker equipped with a camera, according to The Information. The device is projected to retail between $200 and $300 and will be capable of recognizing objects on nearby surfaces and understanding conversations happening in the surrounding environment. It will also feature a Face ID-style facial recognition system, enabling users to make purchases through voice and visual authentication. The announcement comes after OpenAI acquired Jony Ive’s hardware design firm, LoveFrom, in May for nearly $6.5 billion. Since the acquisition, details about OpenAI’s hardware ambitions have gradually emerged. The smart speaker will not be a wearable, and the company has confirmed it will not launch any consumer devices before March 2027. Beyond the speaker, OpenAI is reportedly exploring additional hardware projects, including smart glasses and a smart lamp. However, these remain in early development stages. The smart glasses, if produced, may not reach mass production until 2028, and while prototypes of the smart lamp have been built, it’s unclear whether it will ever be released to the public. The Information notes that OpenAI’s hardware plans are still evolving, with many aspects under active development. The company is not alone in this push—other major tech players are also investing heavily in AI-powered consumer devices. Apple, Ive’s former employer, is reportedly developing smart glasses, an AI-powered pendant, and AirPods with integrated cameras. As competition heats up in the AI hardware space, OpenAI’s entry into physical products marks a significant step in its broader strategy to expand beyond software and into everyday user experiences.
