Microsoft tests AI-powered file search in Windows 11 Copilot, letting users describe files like “chicken tostada recipe” and enhancing search with image analysis and guided help.

Microsoft is testing a new Windows 11 update that enhances the Copilot app with AI-powered file and image search capabilities. The update is currently available to Windows Insiders on Copilot Plus PCs and allows users to search for files and photos using natural, descriptive language. Instead of relying solely on file names, dates, or types, users can now type queries like “find the file with the chicken tostada recipe” and get relevant results based on content. This advancement builds on Microsoft’s earlier rollout of AI-driven search in Windows, introduced earlier this year for Copilot Plus PCs. The new feature leverages on-device AI to understand context and content within files and images, making it easier to locate specific information without needing exact file names. In addition to improved search, Microsoft is also testing a redesigned Copilot home experience. This updated interface will surface recent apps, files, and conversations in a more personalized way. If you select an app from the “get guided help” section, Copilot will automatically launch a Vision session, where it analyzes your screen in real time and provides step-by-step guidance through the app’s interface. Users can also upload a recent photo directly from the left side of the Copilot screen and ask questions about it—such as identifying objects, people, or locations—using AI-powered image understanding. This functionality is designed to make Copilot more interactive and context-aware. These new features are being rolled out across all Windows Insider channels through the Microsoft Store. While still in testing, they signal Microsoft’s continued push to integrate AI deeply into the core Windows experience, making the operating system more intuitive and responsive to user needs.
