Bumble launches 'Bee' AI dating assistant

Bumble, the leading dating application, is integrating generative AI into its platform with the launch of a new assistant named Bee. Announced during the company's fourth-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, Bee functions as a personal matchmaker capable of understanding user values, relationship goals, communication styles, lifestyles, and dating intentions through private conversational interactions. By analyzing these insights, the system aims to identify and suggest more relevant matches for users. Bumble founder and CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd confirmed that Bee is currently in an internal pilot phase but will enter beta testing soon. The assistant is designed to operate similarly to other AI chatbots, allowing users to interact via both text and voice. Initially, Bee will power a new feature called Dates, which leverages AI to recommend compatible partners based on shared intentions and goals. In this model, both users receive a notification explaining why they are a strong match after Bee analyzes their profiles through an onboarding conversation. Future iterations of the assistant are expected to expand into offering date suggestions and soliciting anonymous feedback from past matches. This initiative represents a significant technological overhaul for Bumble, which has historically marketed itself as a platform prioritizing women's safety and needs. The shift aims to counter a stagnating dating market, particularly among Gen Z users who are increasingly fatigued by traditional swiping mechanisms. To adapt, Bumble is experimenting with removing the swipe feature in select markets. Instead, the company is introducing chapter-based profiles that allow members to connect over specific aspects of a user's life story rather than a static set of photos. This approach provides deeper data for AI algorithms and encourages more dynamic engagement. Wolfe Herd emphasized that the goal is to drive better conversations and move users from prolonged digital chats to real-life meetings. The company is also tailoring features for Gen Z, who often prefer group socializing over one-on-one dates. Bumble has been enhancing its infrastructure with AI tools for years, including photo selection and safety features, and has recently updated its back-end systems to support these advanced capabilities. The company also reported strong financial performance for the quarter, with revenue reaching $224.2 million and average revenue per paying user rising 7.9% to $22.20. Following the announcement, Bumble's stock price rallied approximately 40%.
