Meta has confirmed the acquisition of Moltbook, a social platform designed specifically for AI agents, after failing to secure the creator of the rival OpenClaw project. The deal was announced on Tuesday, with details first reported by Axios. As part of the transaction, Moltbook co-founders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr will join Meta's Superintelligence Labs. The acquisition highlights Meta's continued investment in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently attempted to recruit Peter Steinberger, the creator of the popular open-source AI agent OpenClaw, but ultimately failed. Steinberger instead chose to join OpenAI, where OpenClaw will continue to operate independently. Unable to bring Steinberger to their team, Meta turned its attention to the developers behind Moltbook. Moltbook functions as a Reddit-style forum and social network tailored for AI agents. It is designed to run alongside tools like OpenClaw, providing a directory where agents can connect and interact with humans and businesses. According to a Meta spokesperson, the integration of the Moltbook team into Meta's Superintelligence Labs will open new avenues for how AI agents can assist people and companies. The company praised the founders' approach to connecting agents through an always-on directory as a novel step in the space. Alexandr Wang, Meta's chief AI officer who leads its AI research division, is overseeing the integration. Wang has significantly revamped the company's AI efforts since he joined Meta last year following a $14 billion investment in Scale AI, underscoring the intensity of the current competition for top AI talent. Meta did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition.
