OpenAI memo details strategy to beat rivals like Anthropic

According to media reports, OpenAI Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser recently circulated a four-page internal memo to employees outlining the company's future strategic direction, emphasizing long-term competitive advantages built through "platformization" and enterprise business expansion. The memo states that in an environment of rapid AI model iteration and low user switching costs, the company must enhance customer stickiness via multi-product synergy to establish a robust "moat." In the memo, Dresser argued that OpenAI should shift from a single-product mindset to positioning itself as a platform company, strengthening client dependency by offering multiple entry points alongside unified enterprise-grade solutions. "Multi-product adoption will make us harder to replace," she wrote. At the same time, the company plans to reduce investment in non-core businesses and concentrate resources on high-revenue-driving areas, particularly the enterprise customer market. Regarding specific strategies, OpenAI identified five priority directions: enhancing models' capabilities in office scenarios, building an agent platform tailored for enterprises, expanding market channels through its partnership with Amazon, promoting a complete AI tech stack, and reinforcing large-scale deployment capabilities. The memo indicates that enterprise customers now demand deeper integration between AI tools and their business processes—including controllability, reliability, and sustained operational capability—rather than focusing solely on raw model performance. Addressing the competitive landscape, Dresser described the AI industry competition as "unprecedentedly fierce," directly criticizing rival Anthropic for overreliance on a single product trajectory and alleged strategic missteps in compute investments. Meanwhile, OpenAI highlighted its own strengths in computing power, product ecosystem, and understanding of customer needs, while planning to further widen its leadership position. Overall, this memo sends a clear signal that OpenAI is accelerating its transformation from a model provider into an enterprise-level AI infrastructure platform, aiming to secure dominance in the next wave of industrial competition.
