Microsoft has officially launched a new capability within its Office suite known as Agent Mode, a feature previously referred to as vibe working. This update is now available this week in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers, as well as for users on Personal and Family plans. The feature represents a significant evolution from the previous Copilot experience, which Microsoft executives acknowledged had been limited in its ability to execute direct commands on documents. Sumit Chauhan, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Office Product Group, explained that when Copilot was first introduced, the underlying foundation models lacked the necessary power to command applications directly. Consequently, the AI functioned only as a passive partner capable of answering questions but struggling to perform actions on the canvas. Over the past year, advancements in instruction following, reasoning, and overall model quality have addressed these shortcomings. According to Chauhan, the new models can now handle multi-step edits reliably without losing the user's original intent, allowing them to act as an active agent rather than a passive assistant. The core of Agent Mode is its ability to execute complex tasks in real time while providing full transparency into its process. Users can observe the AI agent's workflow through a dedicated sidebar that displays every step the system takes on a document. In Excel, the agent can directly modify workbooks by adding formulas or creating tables. In PowerPoint, it is capable of updating existing presentations with fresh information while strictly maintaining the specific template styling that businesses rely on. Similarly, in Word, the mode facilitates more dynamic editing and content generation directly within the document structure. This rollout marks a strategic shift in how businesses interact with their productivity tools.
