OpenAI Gains Ground on Anthropic in U.S. Business Market
Corporate payment platform Ramp has released new usage data revealing a shifting competitive landscape between OpenAI and Anthropic within the United States business sector. While Anthropic briefly captured market leadership in May with a 41 percent share against OpenAI’s 39 percent, recent metrics indicate OpenAI is rapidly closing the gap. By July, Anthropic held approximately 44 percent of paying business accounts on the Ramp platform, compared to nearly 40 percent for OpenAI, though the latter is currently expanding its share at a faster pace during the third quarter. The analysis draws from more than 70,000 American companies utilizing Ramp’s corporate card and expense management services, a demographic that leans heavily toward technology and software sectors. Ramp economist Ara Kharazian noted that OpenAI’s recent model releases, particularly GPT-5.6 Sol, are driving increased developer adoption. Conversely, Anthropic has faced adoption headwinds following regulatory concerns over its higher-tier Fable model, specifically its mandatory 30-day data retention policy, which dampened both uptake and perceived utility. Despite the head-to-head competition, the broader market for enterprise AI spending continues to expand. Ramp’s data shows that the proportion of its customer base actively purchasing AI services climbed from over 50 percent in March to nearly 56 percent by July, indicating rising commercial viability independent of individual vendor rivalry. However, the volatility in market share underscores a critical dynamic for investors: enterprise AI adoption remains highly fluid. Customer switching behavior correlates directly with model releases and policy adjustments, suggesting that current enterprise AI spending may lack long-term stickiness. Ramp explicitly noted that the findings reflect a specific subset of the corporate market and exclude large enterprises utilizing competing spend-management platforms like American Express. Additionally, the company declined to disclose specific expenditure volumes, reporting only relative market share percentages. Nevertheless, the quarterly trends provide a measurable indicator of commercial momentum. As both OpenAI and Anthropic approach potential initial public offerings, this data highlights a marketplace where technological iteration and compliance strategies directly influence corporate procurement, creating a dynamic environment that demands sustained innovation to retain enterprise accounts.
