Patrik Torstensson, a veteran engineering director at Meta, has resigned after nearly four years leading a large trust and safety team in London to join Lovable, a rapidly expanding Swedish artificial intelligence startup. Torstensson cited a desire for greater influence and the opportunity to lead as a primary driver for his departure from Big Tech, describing his previous role as feeling more like being a passenger than a driver. He officially joined Lovable as head of engineering on April 7. Lovable has seen explosive growth, recently valuing the company at $6.6 billion following a $330 million funding round in December. The platform, which enables users to build applications and websites using AI, reported an increase in annual recurring revenue from $300 million to $400 million within a single month. The company currently employs about 146 people and plans to expand to approximately 400 staff members this year. CEO Anton Osika indicated that Torstensson's recruitment marks a transition from product validation to organizational scaling. The platform has already supported over 40 million projects, with more than 200,000 new creations daily. Lovable aims to empower a new generation of builders, including individuals without technical backgrounds. However, the company operates in a competitive landscape alongside rivals such as Replit and Cursor, facing the challenge of sustaining its rapid expansion. This move reflects a broader shift in the tech industry where top AI talent is increasingly flowing from established giants to high-growth startups. While major technology firms have recently announced significant layoffs, startups are aggressively hiring to compete for skilled workers. Experts note that the appeal of equity and the ability to have a tangible impact on product direction are key motivations for engineers making this switch. Torstensson specifically highlighted Lovable's culture, describing it as a blend of Silicon Valley intensity with a strong team foundation where employees are deeply committed to the mission. The startup prioritizes what it calls founder DNA, seeking individuals who take ownership and operate autonomously. In addition to professional growth, Torstensson's decision involves a return to his home country. After spending over a decade working in Silicon Valley and London, he expressed a desire to contribute to the European tech ecosystem. He noted that as he and his family have aged, relocating to Sweden became a personal priority. Meta did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding Torstensson's departure.
