Signal Implements Default Screen Security to Block Windows 11 Recall Feature, Citing Privacy Concerns
Signal has taken a firm stance against Microsoft's Recall feature on Windows 11, which could potentially compromise the security of its encrypted chats. To counter this, Signal has released a new version of its Windows 11 client that enables screen security by default. This screen security feature is similar to the DRM (Digital Rights Management) technology used by platforms like Netflix to prevent easy screenshotting of copyrighted content. However, it could pose issues for users relying on accessibility tools such as screen readers. According to Umar Shakir, a tech journalist with extensive experience in IT support, Signal's decision reflects a broader concern within the developer community. Joshua Lund, a developer, argues that operating system vendors like Microsoft must provide app developers with the necessary tools and options to prevent OS-level AI systems from accessing sensitive information within their applications. Recall, which was recently launched after two delays, is designed to help users find emails and chats using partial details they remember, such as a description of a picture or a general conversation topic. However, the feature lacks an API that would allow app developers to exclude their users' sensitive content from being indexed and archived by the AI. This oversight could lead to significant security and privacy risks. Lund points out that Microsoft already filters out activity from private or incognito browser windows by default, and users with a Copilot Plus PC can manually exclude certain apps from Recall in the settings. However, this process requires user knowledge and intervention, which isn't always practical. In light of these challenges, Signal has implemented screen security to protect its users' data, emphasizing that this measure is temporary and necessary given the current limitations. While Signal acknowledges that there are valid reasons for users to take screenshots, such as for accessibility purposes, the company insists on prioritizing user privacy and security. Signal remains committed to working towards a solution that balances these needs effectively. Until then, users can easily disable screen security under Signal Settings > Privacy > Screen Security if required.
