BIOSCAN-5M is a comprehensive, multimodal insect biodiversity dataset proposed in 2024 by the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics, University of Guelph, University of Waterloo, Simon Fraser University, Vector Institute, Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) and Aalborg University and Pioneer Centre for AI to understand and monitor global insect biodiversity.BIOSCAN-5M: A Multimodal Dataset for Insect Biodiversity".

The dataset contains detailed information on more than 5 million insect specimens, significantly expanding existing image-based biological datasets. It includes not only classification labels, raw nucleotide barcode sequences, assigned barcode index numbers and geographic information, but also multimodal information such as specimen size.
