Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck's Film Production AI Startup InterPositive
Netflix has officially acquired InterPositive, an artificial intelligence startup co-founded by actor and director Ben Affleck. The company specializes in developing tools specifically designed to streamline film and television production workflows. Under the terms of the acquisition, the entire team of 16 engineers and researchers from InterPositive will join Netflix. Affleck himself will transition into a role as a senior adviser for the streaming giant. Affleck established InterPositive in 2022 after observing the rapid emergence of AI in the industry. He noted that existing tools were often inadequate and felt a responsibility to protect human creativity and support the professionals behind the scenes. In his view, Netflix represents the ideal partner due to its established track record of applying technology responsibly while scaling production capabilities. Affleck aimed to create a system that utilizes vocabulary familiar to cinematographers and directors, ensuring consistency and providing the controls professionals expect on set. The core technology of InterPositive differs significantly from generative AI models that create visual content from text prompts. Instead, InterPositive's systems are designed to ingest dailies—raw footage shot during daily production—and transform them into usable assets for post-production. In discussions with Netflix Chief Technology Officer Elizabeth Stone and Head of Content Bela Bajaria, Affleck explained that these customized models allow filmmakers to mix scenes, color correct footage, and develop special effects more efficiently. Specific applications include manipulating backgrounds, reframing shots, and seamlessly removing unwanted visual elements such as stunt wires. A primary advantage of this technology is its ability to tailor outputs to the specific vision of individual projects. Because the models are trained on the specific dailies of a production, the results are unique and aligned with the filmmaker's intent. However, this process remains dependent on human input, as the models require raw footage to generate any useful output. Affleck emphasized that the ultimate goal is not to replace human talent, but to handle the logistical and technical complexities of production. This allows actors and crew to focus entirely on their performances and creative decisions without being bogged down by difficult technical hurdles. While Netflix has not yet announced a specific timeline for deploying InterPositive's technology across its internally produced content, the integration is expected to be seamless. The streamer likely intends to utilize these tools to enhance production efficiency, with the hope that audiences will notice the improved quality but remain unaware of the underlying AI assistance. This acquisition marks a significant step in how major media companies are integrating AI to support, rather than replace, the creative workforce.
