Harness
Date
Harness is the complete runtime system and engineering infrastructure wrapped around a large model, serving as the core component that transforms a "model that only predicts the next token" into an agent capable of continuously, reliably, and safely completing real-world tasks. It enables the model to precisely handle complex, long-horizon tasks. When requirements involve multiple steps, cross-tool interactions, and recoverability, actual systems shift to the paradigm of "Agent = Model + Harness," leveraging a complete runtime framework (instructions, tools, environment, state, and feedback) to achieve order-of-magnitude improvements in controllability and success rates.
The term "Harness" originates from the "test harness" in software testing, referring to the scaffolding that drives the program under test and compares results against expected outcomes. In 2026, Li et al. provided a clear engineering definition in the paper Object-Oriented Harness: Evolving Agent Harnesses through Object-Oriented Design.
The Harness determines the upper bound of a specific model's performance on particular tasks. Without altering model weights, optimizing only the Harness can significantly improve task success rates, with existing studies reporting improvements of approximately 15 percentage points across multiple long-horizon benchmarks. From an engineering perspective, the Harness is an optimizable and accumulative peripheral variable that is highly coupled with model versions and toolchains.
