Point Cloud

Point CloudA point cloud is a data set of points in space that can represent a three-dimensional shape or object, usually acquired by a three-dimensional scanner. The position of each point in the point cloud is described by a set of Cartesian coordinates (𝑋,𝑌,𝑍), some of which may contain color information (R,G,B) or object reflection surface intensity (English: Intensity) information. Intensity information is obtained by the echo intensity collected by the laser scanner receiving device. This intensity information is related to the surface material, roughness, incident angle direction of the target, as well as the emission energy of the instrument and the laser wavelength. Point cloud is also a collection of point data measured by instruments in reverse engineering.

In the field of computer animation, Pixar used point cloud technology in "Toy Story 3".
