Knowledge Engineering
Knowledge Engineering is a branch of the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that creates rules and applies them to data to mimic the thought processes of human experts. It studies the structure of a task or decision to determine how a conclusion is reached.
In its earliest form, knowledge engineering focused on the transfer process. Transferring the expertise of a human problem solver into a program that could take the same data and come to the same conclusions. Later it was discovered that the transfer process had its limitations because it did not accurately reflect how humans make decisions. It did not take into account intuition and gut feelings, i.e. reasoning by analogy and non-linear thinking, which often may not be logical. Today, knowledge engineering uses a modeling process that creates a system whose results are close to those of an expert, but does not follow the same path or use the same sources of information. The goal of knowledge engineering is to implement it into software so that it can make decisions like a human expert, such as a financial advisor.
