Calibration
definition
Under specified conditions, using a reference standard to assign values to the characteristics of measuring instruments including reference materials and determine their indication errors.
Purpose
- Determine the indication error and whether it is within the expected tolerance range;
- The reported deviation from the nominal value can be used to adjust the measuring instrument or correct the indicated value;
- Assign values to any scale markings or determine other property values, and assign values to properties of reference materials;
- Ensure that the value given by the measuring instrument is accurate and achieve traceability;
- The basis for calibration is the calibration specification or calibration method, which can be uniformly stipulated or independently formulated;
- Calibration is the performance of a predefined process under specified conditions to determine the relationship between known input values and output values.
