Anthropic Expands Claude Cowork to Web and Mobile
Anthropic has officially expanded Claude Cowork beyond its initial desktop release, making the agentic AI tool accessible via web and mobile applications for Max subscribers. Initially launched in January as a desktop-focused interface, the platform is now designed to function as a continuous, cross-device administrative assistant. Users can initiate complex knowledge work on their primary workstation, monitor progress via smartphone, and retrieve finalized outputs regardless of device status, effectively decoupling AI productivity from a single screen. The strategic move positions Claude Cowork as a persistent background agent rather than a traditional coding assistant. The platform automatically manages multi-step workflows, synthesizes information from emails, transcripts, and internal documents, and pauses to request human judgment when critical decisions are required. While the desktop application will retain its role for deep, local-file-intensive tasks, the unified web and mobile experience allows users without local installations to access the same project environment. This architecture supports uninterrupted background processing, enabling scenarios where the system autonomously drafts client briefings or reconciles spreadsheets while the user remains offline. This expansion reflects a broader industry pivot as artificial intelligence developers shift focus from conversational interfaces to embedded operational workspaces. The competition mirrors OpenAI recent evolution of Codex, which has progressively broadened its utility from software development to general business analytics, report generation, and data visualization. By targeting everyday administrative workflows, Anthropic aims to secure ownership of the digital environments where routine corporate tasks are executed, moving beyond the chatbot paradigm toward autonomous workspace integration. Early deployment data published alongside the release reinforces this strategic redirection. Analysis of 1.2 million anonymized sessions across more than 600,000 organizations during late May reveals that software development accounts for merely 8.7 percent of platform usage. The dominant application, representing 33.4 percent of activity, involves business process operating, including consolidated reporting, onboarding checklist generation, and financial reconciliation. Content creation and internal communications comprise the second-largest category at 16.4 percent. These metrics indicate a measurable shift toward AI integration in administrative and operational functions, particularly within finance, human resources, and marketing sectors. Anthropic has indicated that the platform will increasingly serve as a benchmark for enterprise AI adoption, highlighting where automated knowledge work delivers immediate operational value. By unifying chat, project management, and agentic task execution across multiple interfaces, the company is positioning Claude Cowork as a foundational layer for modern office workflows. The expansion signals a decisive move to capture the growing demand for AI systems capable of managing the peripheral yet essential processes that sustain organizational productivity.
