Meta stock sinks on AI funding

Meta shares declined more than five percent on Friday following a Financial Times report that the company is evaluating a potential equity offering to finance its expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure. The speculation emerged after rival Alphabet announced plans to raise $85 billion through a stock sale, an increase from a previously reported $80 billion target. Alphabet’s shares have since faced downward pressure over four consecutive sessions as investors scrutinize the sustainability of heavy technology sector capital expenditures. A Meta spokesperson dismissed the financing report as speculation, noting that the company has not engaged investment banks and has not made a final decision regarding a public offering. Meta reiterated its commitment to pursuing flexible capital strategies to sustain its artificial intelligence development trajectory. Both technology giants are currently projecting record capital expenditure levels for 2026, with Meta raising its guidance to $145 billion and Alphabet increasing its ceiling to $190 billion. This spending surge reflects an industry-wide race to construct computational capacity for generative AI models amid anticipated enterprise and consumer demand. Despite parallel infrastructure commitments, market valuations have diverged significantly. Investors have rewarded Alphabet with a more than 115 percent price appreciation over the past twelve months, largely attributing the outperformance to its profitable cloud computing division. In contrast, Meta shares have declined 13 percent over the same period, ranking as the worst performer among major technology competitors. While Wall Street continues to debate the near-term financial impact of these infrastructure investments, long-term analysts maintain that Meta’s positioning remains strong provided capital deployment meets projected efficiency targets. The company’s financing execution and return on artificial intelligence investments will likely dictate its equity trajectory relative to direct competitors.
