OpenAI Offers Robotics Engineers Up to $500K Annual Salaries

OpenAI is significantly accelerating its entry into physical artificial intelligence through a major recruitment drive for robotics engineers, with base salaries reaching $500,000. The company currently lists 27 open positions spanning hardware design, software development, data collection, and prototyping, reflecting a substantial expansion from earlier hiring phases this year. These listings reveal a comprehensive strategy that extends beyond traditional software control, encompassing actuator engineering, firmware development, and the construction of specialized data collection facilities. The emphasis on in-house data acquisition addresses a critical industry bottleneck. Unlike language models trained on existing internet corpora, robotics requires novel physical interaction data, forcing developers to generate or procure specialized datasets. To support this scale, OpenAI is also recruiting machine-learning engineers to build distributed infrastructure for processing vast robotics training sets. Aditya Ramesh, previously responsible for DALL-E and Sora, now leads the robotics division, steering the team toward what the company describes as general-purpose robotics with AGI-level intelligence. Chief Executive Sam Altman has publicly articulated the division objectives, confirming that OpenAI will develop humanoid robots alongside alternative form factors, with data center automation identified as an initial deployment target. He envisions a future where personal robots handle diverse household tasks. This strategic pivot reactivates the company earlier robotics experiments, which culminated in a 2020 demonstration of a robotic hand solving a Rubik’s Cube, and directly positions OpenAI against heavily capitalized competitors such as Tesla and Figure AI, the latter of which receives funding from the OpenAI Startup Fund. Industry analysts note that the job postings suggest a focus on untethered mobile systems utilizing standard sensors like cameras and laser rangefinders, rather than custom electronics. By integrating world-simulation models with physical hardware development, OpenAI is structuring a vertically integrated robotics pipeline. The aggressive compensation and broad hiring scope underscore the company commitment to scaling physical AI capabilities and competing in the rapidly commercializing robotics market.
