OpenAI Releases GPT-5.5, Enhancing Multi-task Capabilities and Agent-style Workflows
OpenAI recently announced the launch of its next-generation model GPT-5.5, describing it as "the smartest and most intuitive product to date" and marking a new phase in how computers operate. Just one month after the release of GPT-5.4, this new model demonstrates enhanced capabilities in coding and debugging, online research, spreadsheet and document processing, while also being able to collaborate across multiple tools to complete complex tasks autonomously. According to OpenAI, users no longer need to break down tasks step-by-step; instead, they can input an "unstructured multi-step request," and GPT-5.5 will independently plan workflows, invoke tools, validate results, and continue progressing even in uncertain environments—reflecting a more agent-like working paradigm. The model has also seen improvements in security, earning recognition for possessing "the strongest protective measures yet," and delivers superior efficiency by completing tasks on Codex using fewer tokens. Starting this Thursday, GPT-5.5 will be gradually rolled out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers, alongside the introduction of a dedicated GPT-5.5 Pro tier tailored for advanced users. The announcement comes amid intensifying competition among AI models. Anthropic recently launched Claude Opus 4.7 along with Mythos Preview targeting cybersecurity applications, while OpenAI swiftly responded with GPT-5.4-Cyber to strengthen vulnerability detection capabilities. Both companies are now engaged in fierce rivalry over AI programming and enterprise-grade solutions. Additionally, this release coincides closely with the upcoming court hearing between Elon Musk and OpenAI executives Sam Altman and Greg Brockman. Scheduled to begin next week at the U.S. Federal Court in Oakland, California, the case may introduce further uncertainty into the competitive landscape of the AI industry.
