Nubank's David Vélez and BNY's Robin Vince Join OpenAI Boards.

OpenAI has formally appointed David Vélez and Robin Vince to the boards of the OpenAI Foundation and OpenAI Group PBC, strengthening its governance and strategic oversight as the artificial intelligence developer continues its global expansion. The appointments were confirmed by Bret Taylor, chair of both boards, who emphasized that the new directors will provide critical expertise as OpenAI scales its operations and ensures AI technologies deliver broad economic and social benefits. Vélez, founder, chairman, and global CEO of Nubank, brings extensive experience in digital financial transformation and cross-market expansion. Since launching Nubank in 2013, he has grown the platform into one of the world’s largest digital banking networks, serving over 135 million customers across Latin America and securing conditional regulatory approval for a United States national bank. Prior to founding Nubank, Vélez served as a partner at Sequoia Capital focusing on Latin America and held investment banking and growth equity roles at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and General Atlantic. Alongside his wife, Mariel Reyes, he also directs VélezReyes+, a philanthropic platform dedicated to democratic governance, education, and regional economic development. Vince contributes two decades of senior leadership at Goldman Sachs, where he held multiple executive positions including chief risk officer, treasurer, and CEO of Goldman Sachs International Bank, before transitioning to the financial services sector. As chairman and CEO of BNY, a global asset manager and custodian bank with over 240 years of institutional history, Vince has spearheaded a comprehensive operational restructuring, accelerating investments in artificial intelligence and data infrastructure while reinforcing institutional risk management. He currently serves on the boards of the Hospital for Special Surgery and the Perelman Performing Arts Center, and maintains active membership in major financial and civic advisory councils. Both executives are expected to advise OpenAI on balancing rapid technological innovation with robust corporate governance, risk mitigation, and sustainable value creation. Vélez noted that technology expands access and opportunity when anchored in user-centric design and trust, while Vince highlighted that realizing artificial intelligence’s potential requires disciplined deployment and institutional creativity. Their combined backgrounds in scaling consumer-facing platforms, navigating complex regulatory environments, and leading large-scale philanthropic initiatives align directly with OpenAI’s mandate to distribute useful AI responsibly across enterprise and public sectors. The appointments signal OpenAI’s continued emphasis on mature governance structures as it transitions from a research laboratory into a globally integrated technology infrastructure provider.
