London Gatwick Launches UK's First Robotic Parking Service.
London Gatwick Airport has become the first UK aviation hub to deploy a fully autonomous robotic parking system, partnering with Stanley Robotics to launch the service this August. The initiative addresses mounting parking demand while enhancing passenger convenience and maximizing existing infrastructure efficiency. Under the new system, travelers book their parking slot in advance and drive to a secure drop-off cabin near the South Terminal. After scanning their reservation, passengers exit their vehicle and retain possession of their keys throughout the journey. A Stanley Robotics autonomous mobile platform then slides beneath the car, lifts it by the tires, and transports it to a high-density storage zone. Upon return, the system tracks flight arrivals and positions the vehicle in a collection cabin for seamless retrieval. A complimentary shuttle bus and pedestrian pathways ensure straightforward terminal access. The technology fundamentally restructures conventional car park logistics. Because vehicles remain unattended once stored, robotic platforms can arrange cars with minimal spacing, significantly increasing capacity without requiring new construction. This spatial efficiency aligns with Gatwick’s long-term expansion strategy, easing congestion during peak travel periods. Airport executive Oli Bedford highlighted the operational advantages, noting the service eliminates the traditional search for parking bays and delivers a streamlined, stress-free experience. Stanley Robotics chief executive Clément Boussard emphasized that the deployment marks a critical milestone for the company’s UK expansion and directly supports Gatwick’s preparedness for sustained passenger growth. The service accommodates most standard passenger vehicles, though it operates strictly on advance reservations. Walk-up or same-day parking options remain unavailable as the system optimizes route planning and robot allocation for booked slots. On-site staff will assist with emergency vehicle access if passengers inadvertently leave essential items inside. By integrating automation into aviation ground operations, Gatwick and Stanley Robotics demonstrate how robotics can resolve capacity constraints while elevating service standards. The launch sets a precedent for UK transport hubs aiming to modernize parking infrastructure through scalable, space-efficient autonomous solutions.
