Ambi Raises $26M for Ambient AI App From Former Plaud CEO
Former Plaud executive Peter Mo has founded Ambi, a startup developing an ambient AI assistant that continuously listens to users to provide real-time contextual insights. On Monday, the company announced a $26 million funding round led by Luminous Ventures, with participation from Original Design Manufacturer Huaqin. The capital will support Ambi’s expansion of its platform, which currently includes iOS, macOS, and Apple Watch applications designed to function as proactive meeting note-takers and daily context aggregators. Unlike traditional meeting assistants that process summaries post-call, Ambi’s AI agent begins analyzing conversations in real time, cross-referencing calendar data, internal knowledge bases, and public web information to surface relevant suggestions mid-discussion. The platform enables cross-device task continuity and is preparing a desktop application capable of passively storing workflow context for personalized recommendations. The company also intends to release a proprietary hardware device featuring a screen, speaker, camera, and microphone array to capture ambient data and display AI-driven insights. The launch occurs against a backdrop of heightened scrutiny regarding always-on AI audio capture. Privacy advocates and regulators have expressed concerns over devices that lack clear indicators when recording active conversations, a risk recently amplified by similar controversies in the voice transcription sector. Mo acknowledged the disclosure challenge as an industry-wide issue, noting that Ambi’s ambient capture feature is disabled by default and can be toggled off at any time. The startup asserts that no audio recordings are stored, with all processed data encrypted, though specific encryption standards were not disclosed. Mo emphasized that legal and ethical responsibility for notifying third parties about ambient recording currently rests with the end user. Operating with a 50-person engineering and commercial team across San Francisco, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, Ambi is currently scaling its go-to-market operations and recruiting AI engineers specialized in speech recognition. The funding positions the company to advance its ambient computing model while navigating the complex regulatory and ethical landscape surrounding continuous audio data collection.
